Great day for a Snowshoe walk in the Wilderness
Our class had just the best day snowshoeing in Manning Park. The sun was shining, the snow was sparkling...well, here is our day in one of our student's words:
On the 17th (yesterday) we went snowshoeing with the rest of our class and Mrs. Fitz from Agassiz Secondary School. It was so much fun! The bus took us up to Manning Park at 8:30 and we arrived at about 10:30. The ride up was about two hours which may sound long but time flew because I was sitting by my friends who kept me company. When we got there, were taught how to bind up our snowshoes. It was hard at first but all the teachers were there to help. Then the journey began!
The feel of walking in snowshoes at first is weird, especially if you have never done it before. I got used to it by taking slow steps at first and then when I felt comfortable, trying to climb a hill. I ended up getting to the top in no time, and we had our class picture taken on top of it!
At that point, we all had our snowshoes on so we could actually start the hike. Ms. Fitz was at the front leading the way, Mrs. Weaver was in the middle and Ms. Naz was at the back. We followed each other through the trail staying in a single file line. It was so beautiful looking at all the trees covered in snow. I got lots of pictures! We went over a bridge that was kind of scary considering there were no railings! I walked slow and steady over it.
When it was snack time, we had to eat in the snow and it actually really fun! Getting up again after was difficult because the snow was so deep. Some of us got a picture with us throwing snow in the air. It looked so cool because snow was falling on us.
After snack, when we were energized, we kept on walking down the trail. We went up hills and down hills. Some people got tired but it wasn't that bad.
Lunchtime soon arrived. We again had to eat our food, sitting in the snow. Everyone enjoyed a little break from the walk. When lunch ended, our walk back to the bus started. My snow shoe binding came off but from the great instructions earlier, I was able to put it back on.
Everyone made it back to the bus and we got our snowshoes off. The bus was so warm when we got in. I took off all my wet snowier and packed it up in my bag. The bus ride home was fun. When we got back to the school, my mom was there to pick me up. I told her all about the awesome day I had!
A big thank you to everyone and all the teachers that brought us snowshoeing! I had so much fun!
The students all wrote wonderful descriptions of the day. We are hoping to do a hike around here every Friday.
Next Wednesday is Pink Shirt Day. We will be discussing our roles in our class community and our school community. The atmosphere in our class has taken a sharp turn for a lot of angry talk amongst the students (Grade 6 mostly) and many unkind words are being said. Some students are going home feeling very badly and nothing makes me sadder than to see the students hurting each other in such thoughtless and selfish gestures. Please have a talk with your child to see how they are contributing to our school community and how they can practice being kind and thoughtful to each other. We really want to finish our year off with a sense of unity and good Grade Six memories.
This month we have been working on a graphing unit in Math and have wrapped it up. All the students grasped the concepts successfully. We have been reading a novel called Winn-Dixie and will be finishing up our novel study next week. In Socials, we have been learning about our rights and responsibilities as Canadians. The students just finished making a powerpoint presentation about the history of various indigenous bands in BC. They will be presenting theirs tomorrow, except Madilyn and Cassidy who presented theirs today and impressed us with the excellent presentation they made!
One more thing...I am seeing a lot of cell phones at school...do they really need to take them to school? The office is more than willing to give you a call if needed. Also, please talk to your kids about the texts they receive and send. I overheard some talking and it sounds like there have been some nasty ones going around.
Next Friday is a Pro-D day so enjoy the long weekend with your families.
Please be sure to email me with any questions or concerns or just to connect. I really miss being able to chat with you!
Thank you, Wendy Weaver
